New hires and newly eligible employees, and their spouses, have a special 60 day period (starting with their hire date or date of eligibility) to apply for coverage under the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program with abbreviated underwriting.

This means that new hires/newly eligible employees applying for the 3 and 5 year benefit periods only have to answer 7 medical questions; their spouses only 9. If they are applying for unlimited coverage, they will have to answer more medical questions. After the special 60 day period, eligible individuals can still apply, but must go through the full underwriting process and answer more medical questions.
